After getting off the call with this number I called the number on the back of my card and it's a legit phone number with the bank.
It does seem sketchy though which they need to try and fix. You just need to be extra cautious and do some research on it.
Very convincing scam. DO NOT trust the positive reviews and always call the number on the back of your card rather than any number you’re provided over text. This almost got me until they asked for my full social security number and it struck me as odd. Usually banks only ask for the last four numbers because they have your social security number pulled up on your computer. There’s no reason for them to ask for the whole thing. Always play it safe.
This is, in fact, safe. When I called the number on the back of my card, they gave me the same information and confirmed everything they told me. It seems like a scam, but it is not, and if you are not comfortable giving the SSN, there are other ways of confirming your identity. They also transfer you to an actual person to talk to. When I gave them my mailing address, I gave the wrong street name, and they told me it was wrong and that they had the correct one on file. They were able to block m
Lots of misinformation here. After a few fraudulent transactions appeared on my account and I locked my card, I later received a text about another attempted transaction. After I replied that it wasn't me, I received a response with this # and a fraud case number. Overly cautious, I called the number on the card and the rep did have all of this information. That said, you shouldn't trust a call *from* this number, but if you are calling them, it's safe. If you feel uneasy about it, use the numbe
The number is valid. It’s annoying that there is conflicting info on the site. The people who marked it as a scam obviously didn’t try to follow up with capital one using the number on the card. It does ask you to verify your SSN when you call that number, but that is because YOU are calling Capital One. It’s not them reaching out to you. It still skeeved me out, so I hung up and called the number on my card and handled it that way. Always better safe than sorry!
They called me tonight regarding Fraud on my account. I knew something was odd when Capital One asked for my Social Security Number so I gave them a fake one I made up out of my head. Couldn't find an account associated with that SSN. It then forwarded me to an agent, but the fraud department was closed.
Called (833) 489-1234 and it prompted me to give my SSN, which felt odd, but I did it. After I hung up and grabbed my wallet, got my cc and called (800) 655-2265, which is the number on the back. They confirmed the 833 # is associated w/ Cap One and the charges I was texted and emailed about.
Not sure why so many are saying this number (833) 489-1234 is a scam. I called the number on the back of my card (always the smarter option) and confirmed with the rep that the texts and email (both sent by Capital One showing the same number above) were correct.
You can be cautious, especially when the number is asking you to enter your SSN over the phone, but don't spread misinformation. My situation involved a fraudulent zero charge using my business debit card. They already froze the n
Phishing attempt! Called the number in the email they gave me and thought it was strange they immediately asked for my ssn. I called the Capital One number on the back of my card and they confirmed it wasn't them.
This scam is really convincing. You will get a text message asking if a charge was yours. The text message will include the last four digits of your card. If you answer "no" you'll get another message telling you that your card has been restricted and that you should call the provided number.
If you check your Capital One account, you will see a series of fraudulent charges similar to the one in the text message. This is because they actually do have your card number and have used it to make
Be very AWARE. Reached out to CapitalOne on the number on the back of my card (1-800-277-4825) regarding a very convincing phising email scam. They confirmed the number in this scam email (833-489-1234) does NOT belong to CapitalOne. Case number and ending card number from the email also does not pull up in their system (it's fake). Confirmed with agent that capital one will NEVER ask you for your full social security number over the phone. Do NOT give any agent your full information. Call the n
Claims to be Capital One... It is not. They will send very real looking emails with the Capital One logo, etc. Call only the number on the back of your Capital One card... Do not call this number. It is a recording, etc. That claims to be Capital One.
I originally entered my debit card number on a legitimate site, but had an add that made it look like I was entering my information on their site. I realized my mistake too late. They charged on my account a minimal amount $2. 98, but then I got a text from this number stating if I had auth a charge for the site I had mistakenly given my card number to. I was opted to put in yes or no. I did then it provided me this number to call as they had suspended my card. I'm glad I did not call. Be carefu
Same text as the other messages, but I called Capitol One at the number on my card and they confirmed that it was their fraud dept that had contacted me.
Same as everyone. Got the text and the email. The window that popped up from the email was a secure site (messaging. Capitalone. Com...). Everything seemed legit: no spelling or grammatical errors like I'd usually expect. Called the number and was asked for my full SSN or my tax ID. It definitely felt fishy. Entered my SSN via the keypad (I knew better but somehow, in the moment, that doesn't matter). The message said they were "unable to confirm my information," which was even fishier. Reached
I received a text an email this morning (4/28/22) that a transcation was made on my card and gave me a Capital One Fraud case# and a number to call. And, I noticed the number is didferent from what CapitalOne usually uses. I called CapitalOne first to make sure the number was right and sure enough they don’t recognized the number and even the case#. I am glad I did not dial the 833 number. So, just be aware with this number and make sure to call your bank first.
I believe this is a very sophisticated scam in which you will be texted and e-mailed with a tel # which has an answering machine with a Capital One announcement. They immediately want your full SS# and full account number (despite the e-mail copying a Capital One text saying they'll never ask for such). I spoke to someone who was adamant that despite me providing the case # in the e-mail, you must provide full SS and account number. Go to your bank instead to see if there is a fraud case.
I called the number from the text and did not give them my ssn and they were still able to pull my account, verify the charge (that didnt show up on my app because they blocked it) and mail me a new debit card.
I had received the text regarding fraudulent activity. I called the provided number in the text and I had been asked for SSN. I did give my SSN and afterwards started worried about it. I contacted Rep from Capital one and they verbally confirmed about the text and they are the one who tried reaching out to me for fraudulent activity.
Got a txt message for a debit card fraud (with correct last 4 digits of my card from Capital One). I called back to the number in the txt, the first thing it asked was my full Social security number. It sounded very fishy. I called the Capital One with phone number on my card, and there is indeed a fraud transaction!!
Ard that ACTUALLY WORKS (I tried it and it does from my Checking as it should so...)
Guess this one's safe! Also to confirm what others said: If YOU started the call and it asks for your SSN, it could still be safe. This number has the option to enter your account number instead anyway.
IF SOMEONE ELSE CALLED YOU...THEN you should not give them your SSN. Instead try to get the phone number and say you'll call later...THEY WON'T GIVE IT TO YOU.
Little tip there.
The number belongs to Capital One. After reading some of these comments I got scared that I may have been duped into giving my personal information out and I called the known number in which I have dealt with Capital One in the past and they verbally confirmed the number belongs to them.
I know it sounds weird but its a safe number. I called the number on the back on my debit card to verify - they did also ask for my full social security number like the other reviews said. I told them I wasn't comfortable doing that and just had to verify my account number. There was a fraud charge on my account so I know its sketchy but it is a safe number - just tell them you don't want to give your social
This is indeed a Capital One phone number. I called the number on the back of my card and they verified there was fraud on my account (which these transactions did not show under transactions on my account on the web). Safe number, just not listed on their webpage for some reason.
Supposedly it’s a number from capital one bank but I’m not sure. I received a text message of a purchase saying me I purchased something but I didn’t made a purchase. I went to my bank account and there was no sign of movement or suspicious activity on my account. And then I received an email about this issue and to call this number but I haven’t. I have doubts about this.
I got the same email/text. Called # just like everyone else asked for SSN and hung up. I called # on back of card. Again Asked for SSN hung up. Thinking maybe this went deeper. Called another 888 number on website asked for Representative. I was able to give Account number. They asked me for last deposit I gave it I in turn asked the last transaction they see and was able to give it.
I agree the number should not ask for full SSN, but in the end there was a bogus charge I got reversed, and a ne
Received an email seemingly from capital one about a fraudulent charge and asked if its ok or not. When you click no it says opps theres has been an issue and gives you a number to call. When you call the number it immediately asks you for your ssn number.. Meanwhile if you call capital one directly they ask for either your account number or ssn number. Seems fishy. Also on m capital one app there is no such transaction.
I don't trust that number because the first thing they ask for is your social security number. I agree with others, call Capital One directly. If this is Capital One's number, they should change it to something you can link on their website. I did not find the...-1234 number anywhere on the website
I had the same concerns as others here, but called Capital One directly from the number on the card and they confirmed that it was indeed them. They also noted that sometimes they will ask for the full SSN and other information - they will NOT call you directly asking for it though.
This phone number came from an email and a page that is directly out of capitalone. Com, but we still believe that it is a scam. The first thing the machine asks for is your FULL SSN. They should only need the last 4 digits, if anything at all, but it should never be the first question. Beware. Just call their customer service line, instead. This is definitely a scam.
Got SMS from this number related to CapitalOne debit card fraud asking for Yes or No reply. However the number does not belong to CapitalOne and CapitalOne does not confirm reported fraud activity.
